Dan Kantor: Tumblr MP3 Player

  • fpeyre · 5 months ago
    Dan,
This is a wonderful application! Totally changed my life on my Tumblrblog.
    Thanks for the work there!

  • Kelly · 7 months ago
    Hey Dan,
With the new script as above, how do I still get it to play from another site where I post my music instead of the actual blog where I am posting the streampad bar? I've tried using the old way (placing an api behind the question mark in the script), but it hasn't worked. It comes up with "no songs".
  • roamin · 1 year ago
Perfect, Dan, just what I was looking for. Minimal, effective. I see you already have a bookmarklet available! Kudos and thanks!
  • Muzica Noua · 12 months ago
Two THUMBS up from me as well
  • Kyle Sherman · 11 months ago
One person has commented about trying to make the player move from the top of the page to the bottom. is there any way i could move the player from the bottom to the top? my layouts custom, unlike the person who experienced the player automatically going to the top...not sure if that matters. thanks a lot if you can help out!
  • cnidaria · 12 months ago
    wu! thank you.
  • maya · 12 months ago
    this is really awesome.
    thanks :]

and this is sort of a related question but if you want one of your itunes songs on this MP3 player (even if most itunes songs are MP4S)... is it possible to somehow convert your itunes music to a MP3 ?
  • David · 11 months ago
Open up iTunes. Keep in mind I'm using the latest iTunes.

    1. Edit > Preferences
    2. Go to the "General" tab.
    3. Click the "Import Settings"
    4. In "Import Using" put to "MP3 Encoder"
    5. You can change the quality. I use 128 kbps.
    6. Click "OK" enough times till you're back to your library.
    7. Click the song you want to convert to MP3.
    8. Right click it. Choose "Create MP3 Version".

Wait till it's done. And there you go.

You can find the MP3 version in your iTunes folder.
    For me it's
My Documents > My Music > iTunes > iTunes Music
  • Jay Robinson · 1 year ago
This is really cool! I'd really enjoy being able to style with CSS, though.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Jay - you should be able to style it. Have a look at http://tuneage.tumblr.com/
  • Jay Robinson · 1 year ago
    Doh! Sorry.
  • Todd Wickersty · 1 year ago
Dan - This is fantastic. I've been discussing with others how to get this accomplished on our live music tumblelog and now we don't need to. I really like the placement of the player - very slick.

You can check it out at http://orangesunshine.org and http://tumblr.toddwickersty.net.

    Thanks again!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Todd - awesome blog. Of course any blog that starts with Pearl Jam at Bonnaroo has to be awesome :)
  • Todd Wickersty · 1 year ago
Thanks Dan. Glad you like it.

In case you are looking for enhancements, I have a couple ideas that have
    probably been mentioned already:
    1. Random play mode - Give the user the option to play tracks in a random
    sequence
    2. Enable scrobbling for last.fm

However, I am extremely happy with what you've done to date and don't care
if you change it one bit. Thanks again!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Great ideas. Thank you for posting them here.
  • livejamie · 1 year ago
I came here to make those two exact suggestions. Strange.

The random should be fairly easy to implement, shouldn't it, Dan?
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
It's a little tricky because Tumblr only sends 20 songs at a time. Doing random on those 20 is easy. But to do random on the whole set of audio posts is hard.

I'm a huge last.fm guy and scrobbling is very important to me. It is somewhat complex but is definitely on the to-do list.
  • Dan Kantor · 4 months ago
  • Todd Wickersty · 4 months ago
    Awesome, thanks Dan!
  • Eric · 1 year ago
Dan. Great work! I hope lots of people put this into their tumblelogs, I would go to their actual site a lot more and play music there.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Thanks Eric. I hope so too
  • britticisms · 1 year ago
    Amazing.
  • davidkarp · 1 year ago
    This is awesome, Dan!

If the SCRIPT tag doesn't need to appear in the HEAD, it might be better for users to paste this in their Description field. That will work for non-custom themes, and survive any theme changes.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
    Thanks David.

I put it in the Description field and it seemed to hold up the page render a bit. It will work, but I think most people would rather not have their page wait for it.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Hell yeah! I love the footer placement vs. yet another sidebar widget. The colors even match pretty well with my site...

    http://joelaz.com

Anyway you can hack this into the dashboard so we can listen to the people we follow as a playlist? Maybe a greasemonkey script or something? Ok, I'll shut up and go away now.

    Awesome job.
  • daryn · 1 year ago
    awesome job, looks great!
  • bijan · 1 year ago
    Fantastic Dan. Great job!
  • bijan · 1 year ago
    question/suggestion:

can you tweak the code so it doesn't frame the page. I'd much rather have it set up so you have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the streampad player.

    thoughts?
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
    Hi Bijan,

That's not an easy one. I'll take a look at what it takes to do that and follow up.
  • kortina · 1 year ago
Awesome--I was playing with building something like this, but now I don't have to!
  • kortina · 1 year ago
2 things I would love to see: (1) popout player (2) javascript bookmarklet that launches the popout player on anyone's tumblog, regardless of whether or not they have your snippet installed.

Listening to orangesunshine right now. Thanks for building this, Dan!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
You hit the nail right on the head. Bookmarklet coming very soon. Popout player in the works.
  • kortina · 1 year ago
Awesome, dude. Following you now on tumblr so I know when it happens.
  • aatw · 1 year ago
    This is very cool. :)
  • ilkhom · 1 year ago
Dan, it's cool and very useful. Thanks a lot. :)
  • hannes · 1 year ago
    Very cool. Thanks.

But being able to open the player in a small "pop-up" window might also come in handy :)
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
I hear ya loud and clear
  • hannes · 1 year ago
My bad... just read now in the comments that a popout player is apparently in the works :) Look forward to it...
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
sweet. i've added it to my blog. i love the footer placement!
  • mb · 1 year ago
    Simple. Perfect. Good work.
  • Andrew Meyer · 1 year ago
Dan, this is top notch stuff. I was hoping that Tumblr would create something like this. Thanks for beating them to the punch. You just made Tumblelogs everywhere that much better. :)
  • mdoeff · 1 year ago
This is great Dan. I've added it here: http://mdoeff.tumblr.com
  • aprilini · 1 year ago
I really appreciate that there is a play count. Thank you so much sir!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Just released the bookmarklet version, you can grab it here - http://blog.dankantor.com/post/43296426/tumblr-...

This will allow you to insert the player into an Tumblr blog that doesn't have it.

Please leave comments here or there. It should work exactly the same but you know how these things work!
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Cool! I restyled it a bit, ok? ;)
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Dan. it conflicts with a FancyZoom script (which I also use).
    FancyZoom homepage: http://www.cabel.name/2008/02/fancyzoom-10.html
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll take a look.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
I changed some things around. If you can let me know if it still conflicts, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Now its OK! Thank You a lot!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Very glad to hear. Checked it out - I like that Sebastien Tellier song a lot.
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Just restyled a bit. Is it OK?
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
yeah looks good. The only thing I'll say is that by not linking to the original source, you may miss updates. Your choice of course!

I'm going to add a way to change the default message soon. If that helps...
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Yes. Change log in this post would be great!
  • charmlessman · 1 year ago
Hi, thanks for this, it is awesome.

I reblogged your post and translated it to spanish so more people know how to use this. All credit goes to you of course, Thanks again!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
    Awesome! Thank you.
  • Jermbob · 1 year ago
    Love it! Thanks Dan!
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Hmm. I found a little bug: Clicking "powered by STREAMPAD" is the same as clicking "Click to play all audio posts".

My OS: Ubuntu Linux 8.04 hardy Heron
    My browser: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; ru; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008071719 Firefox/3.0.1
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
I see that as well. Thanks for the find. Looks like I need to stop the click event.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Just uploaded a fix. Let me know if it still is broken. Thanks.
  • Iboong · 1 year ago
Now its perfect! Thanks for quick feedback!
  • pablofamoso · 1 year ago

  • djlovep · 1 year ago

  • raydancer · 1 year ago
This is pretty cool. Any chance that Streampad could be finessed into playing my muxtape on my tumblr page? (the whole of social media has just gone cross-eyed)
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Great idea. I'll have a look at Muxtape and see if there is something that can be done. I know they don't have an API but the pages are XHTML so there is always that.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Added a post to document ways in which you could hack the player here - http://blog.dankantor.com/post/44220166/tumblr-...

  • Audrey Koh · 1 year ago
This is very good MP3 player, Dan! Good job! I know I'mm enjoy this! :D
  • Zuffox · 1 year ago
Amazing. Anything that can accommodate my laziness is always welcomed. Playing Tuneage songs track by track wasn't really a viable concept.
  • Taiwan Brown · 1 year ago
    great hack!!!!!!!!!
  • livejamie · 1 year ago
Is there a way I can have it appear when a user clicks on a link?
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
At this point there is no way to do this. Will see what I can do though...
  • livejamie · 1 year ago
I'd appreciate it. Something at the footer that I can put "Click here to play all audio posts" and then it opens up the bar.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Ah, I didn't realize that's what you meant. Sorry. You can do that today. You need to dynamically create a script tag in javascript. I'll email you instructions how to do this since Disqus will strip out the code here.
  • livejamie · 1 year ago
    Thanks Dan!
  • Ryan Graves · 1 year ago
Dan- how can I get this to work on a wordpress blog? Will this code only work on Tumblr?
    Thanks.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
This will currently only work on Tumblr. I am working on some other platforms though.

You can set up a tumblr blog, post audio to it, then pull those posts into your Wordpress blog if you want today.
  • Ryan Graves · 1 year ago
Dan - is that how Fred Wilson does it currently? I really like the
footer at the bottom of the page on his blog.

    Thanks for the help!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Yeah, that's how he does it. Have a look at this page for instructions to set it up - http://blog.dankantor.com/post/44220166/tumblr-...

Basically, you include the javascript and point it to your tumblr blog like - .js?api=[your blog url]
  • luka · 1 year ago
    Perfect. Thanks!
  • karmicunderpath · 1 year ago
For some reason it works on other peoples Tumblrs but not on mine :(
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Can you post your blog url? thanks
  • karmicunderpath · 1 year ago
sure! http://karmicunderpath.tumblr.com I dont have it enabled at the moment as it doesn't work. I cant even get Mumblr to work, (Muxtape-tumblr mashup thing). :(
  • Tumbledore · 1 year ago
Have the recent changes to Tumblr "broken" this awesome tool? The songs still play, but the playcount is off and the text now reads "#/undefined" before each track (at least on mine).
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Thanks for pointing this out. I will look into it.
  • delaverp · 1 year ago
Was just wondering if you figured out the '#/undefined' issue?
In addition I noticed on 'tuneage' the tool will only play the latest 20 songs. I don't think that it use to stop at twenty or did it?

    Thanks
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
I confirmed that it's definitely a Tumblr API issue. I reached out to them and hope to hear back soon.

It is only playing the last 20 now b/c Tumblr is no longer returning how many total songs there are.
  • MattHogan · 1 year ago
Mine did that "#/undefined" for one load of my site. I went to refresh the page to see if that'd fix the problem, and now it always says " No Audio Posts Found." Was it something I did, or is it on Tumblr's side of the fence?
  • aaronburns · 1 year ago
Mine's doing the same thing on:
    http://songsyouusedtolove.tumblr.com

Is there anything that can be done about it?
  • burningfencepost · 1 year ago
Good job, thank you and well done. I've tried that yahoo player, but this ones all better n'that.

Make it scrobble to LastFm, go on!

sorry, don't want to come across all ungrateful.

    thanks again.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
    scrobbling is def a priority.
  • aberjona · 1 year ago
    Wow. Great jorb, Dan.
  • arealcoolhand · 1 year ago
Thanks for fixing the "undefined" bug!
  • Álber · 1 year ago
Dan, this is awesome: Outstanding tumblr add-on, and excellent user support here on comments!

I have one suggestion/question/request: Could the progress bar have some kind of CLICK & JUMP (or DRAG & JUMP, at least)?

Would it be too hard to code?
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
I am gld you like it. The next version (coming soon!) will have click & jump.
  • Álber · 1 year ago
    Yay!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
This should be in there now.
  • Jennyyo · 1 year ago
    Sweet! Thanks so much.

awesome player. i'm almost certain i saw somewhere that you could 'tag' the artist and title to appear, but i cannot find it.
could you help out the searchably challenged?
    thnx,

Can you change the colors of it and like the links too?
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
  • MeganLeigh · 1 year ago
Ok, so my theme puts the music player on the top of the page but others put it on the bottom. I don't like how it's on the top. Is there a possible way i could put it on the bottom without changing my theme?
    Check it out:

    http://www.meganpruitt.tumblr.com
  • arealcoolhand · 1 year ago
I changed my site's custom theme to Sofa King. I like it so far but when I added the player to my page, it blocked the navigation and credit links at the bottom of the page. Any idea how I might be able to get around this? I like having the player (and look forward to making it match the top bar, I think that'll look great) but don't want to make it confusing for people to get around my blog. Thanks for any advice you might have!
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
You'll need to go into your css and modify this - #top,#pagination. Just add margin-bottom:30px; and you should be set.
  • arealcoolhand · 1 year ago
Thanks for you help, Dan. The silly thing is that I ended up changing themes and the problem is happening with this one as well. Will the same thing fix it? Sorry to be a bother but I really do like the player and would love to keep it!
  • Nathan Bowers · 1 year ago
I'm using StreamPad on my own self hosted blog, so I can add stuff to the body tag.

Is there a <body onLoad=""> event I could call to have the player automatically start when the page loads?

    Thanks, and great player.
  • SatChitAnanda · 1 year ago
hello, i am totally new to this. i've seen a lot of beautiful website and want to learn how to style my background with my own pictures. is that possible? I want to change the font type as well. its just too big and ugly. can you help? the basic layout from tumblr is plain and i want to have fun by changing it around like other people's website. your music player is great! thank you. any help is greatly appreciated. you can check it out at satchitananda.tumblr.com i want to make that man as my background , is it possible. i've seen greater websites!!!

    Hi Nathan,

I can add an autoplay=true param to take care of that for you. I'll let you know when that's in there.
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
I added an autoplay param. Just add autoplay=true and it will start playing when the page loads. Check out doc here - http://blog.dankantor.com/post/44220166/tumblr-...

  • yr momma · 1 year ago
hi, maybe you answered this, but i'd like to know if there is any way a song can continue playing after i click 'next page' on a tumblr blog... by looking at mine the player has to be restarted if i flip through pages on the tumblr blog.

    thanks
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
Currently no. We will be releasing a new version soon that allows you to pop the player into a new window. That way, you could still listen while surfing around.

Hey bud, great hack. TLDNR on the comment section below, but I was wondering if it's possible to use this as a embedable widget/badge instead of having it claim the bottom portion of the page and remain static. That's the only part that is keeping me from using it.

    Regardless, great work!

  • Jhahn · 11 months ago
Hello. I am wondering how you add music to the player?
I have copied the code and pasted it into my tumblr site but I am still confused as to how I'm suppose to get music playing.
  • Dan Kantor · 11 months ago
In Tumblr, add an "audio" post. Then it will show up in Streampad.
  • Jhahn · 11 months ago
    Thank you so much!
Also, I have a few more questions.
Can I only upload one song into streampad per day?
If now, how do I add more songs? I have tried to make another audio post but it will not add to the streampad player.
Is there a way to remove the songs?
Thank you in advance once again :D

I'm a huge fan of this player! I just installed it tonight. I love the sleek look, too.

I uploaded 1 mp3 and reblogged about 5 tracks so far this evening, but only the first 3 are appearing in the music player. The songs have been successfully added to my site [they're appearing on my dashboard just fine], but not on the player.

    Any ideas?

BTW, you won't see the mp3 posts on my main page when you visit the site because I've changed their dates to bury them within the posts.

    Thanx,
    Mariela
  • Dan Kantor · 11 months ago

  • Nick Divers · 10 months ago
DAN! love your plugin stuff man. building my blog now. I have some layers that sit on the bottom, and your cover art popup menu list thing shows up behind it.

is there any way that I can change the z-index of that so that it comes up on top?

    much love and respect.
  • Dan Kantor · 10 months ago
Hey Nick, thanks for the love. Can you post a link to your site so I can check it out? It should have a high z-index. May have to make it higher though...
  • Nick Divers · 10 months ago
yeah sure. you can check out the problem at divers.tumblr.com, which I am just using as a sandbox for now.

and in case you are curious, that layer on top is z-index is set to 2. The bottom bar (at z-index 1000 haha) is definitely on top. My main issue is how to make your cover art add-on work in this theme.

    thanks in advance.
